Katie Leria

Katie was born next to a billabong and grew up on Louisa Downs Station where her father was a stockman. Since the early 1980’s Katie has lived at Yiyili Aboriginal Community. Katie predominately paints using acrylic on canvas. She has also begun carving artefacts and has gained experience in this new medium. Katie is spoken highly of in a book written about Louisa Downs called, Diamonds and Dust, author Sheryl McCorrie. She has participated with great enthusiasm in many projects and exhibitions, funded by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island art board of the Australia Council. In 2019 she participated in the Jimmy Pike scholarship in Perth which gave her the chance to experiment with the printmaking process. Her approach to exploring the flowers and bush tucker of her country in her paintings create bold and textural works of art. Her work is bought by many interstate buyers.
